The numbers behind UConn’s 1-2 games

Here’s a little history on the University of Connecticut women’s basketball team and its involvement in games featuring the top two teams in the Associated Press poll. The second-ranked Huskies take on No. 1 Stanford Saturday at 4 p.m. at Maples Pavilion.

UConn is 13-3 overall in 1-2 games, 3-1 as the No. 2 team as it will be on Saturday.

UConn is 4-1 on the road in 1-2 games as it will be on Saturday including 1-1 as the second-ranked team. The Huskies beat No. 1 Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium in 2003 but lost at top-ranked Baylor a year ago.

UConn is 3-0 against Stanford in 1-2 games and was ranked No. 1 all three times. The Huskies defeated the Cardinal 83-64 in a 2009 Final Four semifinal game in St. Louis, 80-68 at the XL Center in Hartford on Dec. 23, 2009, and 53-47 in the 2010 national championship game in San Antonio.

The only team UConn has faced more times than Stanford in 1-2 games is Tennessee (6). The Huskies went 5-1 against the Lady Vols in 1-2 affairs from 1995-2002.

Jan. 8, 2000: No. 1 UConn beat No. 2 Tennessee 74-67, at Knoxville, Tenn.

April 2, 2000: No. 1 UConn beat No. 2 Tennessee 71-52, for NCAA championship in Philadelphia.

Dec. 30, 2000: No. 1 UConn beat No. 2 Tennessee 81-76, at Hartford, Conn.

March 6, 2001: No. 2 UConn beat No. 1 Notre Dame 78-76, for Big East championship in Storrs, Conn.

March 30, 2001: No. 2 Notre Dame defeated No. 1 UConn 90-75, at St. Louis, Mo.

Jan. 5, 2002: No. 1 UConn beat No. 2 Tennessee 86-72, at Knoxville, Tenn.

March 31, 2002: No. 1 UConn beat No. 2 Oklahoma 82-70 for NCAA championship in San Antonio.

Feb. 1, 2003: No. 2 UConn beat No. 1 Duke 77-65, at Durham, N.C.

Jan. 19, 2009: No. 1 UConn beat No. 2 North Carolina 88-58 at Chapel Hill, N.C.

April 5, 2009: No. 1 UConn beat No. 2 Stanford 83-64 at St. Louis, Mo.

Dec. 23, 2009: No. 1 UConn beat No. 2 Stanford 80-68 at Hartford, Conn.

April 6, 2010: No. 1 UConn beat No. 2 Stanford 53-47 for NCAA championship in San Antonio
