Breanna Stewart didn’t have her best games against Duke and Cincinnati for the University of Connecticut women’s basketball team. But the Huskies’ forward did do enough to earn Big East Freshman of the Week honors for the third time this season.
Stewart averaged 11.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in the two wins for UConn (18-1 overall, 5-1 Big East), which hosts Villanova at the XL Center in Hartford Tuesday night. She had had 13 second-half points, five rebounds, and three blocked shots in a 79-49 rout of Duke last Monday. She then had 10 points and seven rebounds in a 67-31 win at Cincinnati Saturday.
Louisville junior guard Antonita Slaughter was chosen the Big East Player of the Week. Slaughter averaged 18.0 points and 6.0 rebounds in the Cardinals’ wins over Marquette and St. John’s. Notre Dame’s Skylar Diggins, St. John’s Shenneika Smith, Seton Hall’s Brittany Morris, Syracuse’s Brittany Sykes, and Villanova’s Laura Sweeney were named to the Big East honor roll.
