UConn releases two-deep for Towson

John F. Silver

UConn’s camp is over and the two-deep for the opener a week from today against Towson is out.

There were few stunning moves, but there were some notable position battles that have played out.

Perhaps the most consequential is at center where Alex Mateas is back as the starting center beating out Tyler Bullock. Mateas started last season, but Bullock ended the season as the starter after superior play. Mateas worked his way from a suspension this spring to win the job.

Notably, at fullback, true freshman Matt Walsh edged out redshirt frosh Jazmarr Clax for the job. Walsh runs hard and is a big bruising fullback.

Backup quarterback Chandler Whitmer, as expected, is Casey Cochran. I would imagine Tim Boyle is No. 3 and will travel.

Two injury thoughts, Sean McQullian is listed as the starter at tight end, which means that they expect him back sooner rather than later at tight end after suffering a concussion.

The same is not true for Andrew Adams. Obi Melinfowu is listed as the starter at free safety and Adams is not on the depth chart. Adams hurt his shoulder last Saturday during practice.

Other notable moves, Brian LeMelle is the top punt returner. Lemelle is a true frosh, the second true frosh starters.

On the D-line, Tim Willman wins a starting job and Ruben Frank is his backup. Angelo Pruitt backs up Jesse Joseph while Julian Campenni and Shamar Stephen start at defensive tackle.

Here’s the two-deep:
