Final: UConn 71, St. John’s 65

NEW YORK — The University of Connecticut women’s basketball team found a way Saturday.

Kelly Faris and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis scored all the points in a decisive 15-7 second-half run as the third-ranked Huskies came from behind to defeat St. John’s 71-65 in Big East action at Carnesecca Arena.

UConn (20-1 overall, 7-1) reached the 20-win plateau for the 20th straight win.

But St. John’s (10-10, 4-4) attempted to pull its second upset of the Huskies in 12 months. It was tied at 35 at halftime and the Red Storm led by as many as six in the second half.

Down 53-52, Faris’ 3-point basket with 6:07 left put UConn in front. A three-point play by Mosqueda-Lewis’ three-point play gave UConn a lead it wouldn’t relinquish with 4:19 remaining. A trey by Faris made it 67-60 with 1:40 to go. Bria Hartley and Kiah Stokes hit two free throws each to ice it.

Mosqueda-Lewis finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds for UConn. Faris had 17 points. Shenneika Smith paced St. John’s with 21 points.
