At the half: UConn 35, St. John’s 35

NEW YORK — For the second regular season game in a row, St. John’s is giving the University of Connecticut women’s basketball team fits.

Aliyyah Handford has 12 points while Briana Brown, a 27-percent 3-point shooter, is 3-for-3 from behind the and has 11 points as the Red Storm has forged a 35-35 tie with the third-ranked Huskies Saturday at Carnesecca Arena.

Kiah Stokes got her first career start for UConn as junior center Stefanie Dolson is ill and not playing. She is sitting on the Huskies’ bench.

A year ago, St. John’s ended UConn’s NCAA record 99-game home winning streak with a 57-56 victory at Gampel Pavilion.

The Red Storm led by as many as five early Saturday. UConn didn’t take its first lead until Brianna Banks’ layup made it 18-17. Banks was helped off the floor with 10:02 left with an apparent knee injury.

Five points by Morgan Tuck put UConn (19-1, 6-1) ahead 32-24 but the Red Storm (10-9, 4-3) closed the half with an 11-3 run to get even.

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis leads the Huskies with 10 points.
